The increasing need for processing and computing power has resulted in a significant rise in carbon emissions, costs, inadequate waste management practices, depletion of natural resources, and excessive energy consumption within data centres. These challenges highlight the importance of achieving sustainability in Information Technology (IT)-based industries' data centre operations (Jnr, B.A., Majid, M.A. and Romli, A., 2018). Reducing energy consumption of data centres has attracted more and more attention. To address this concerns Green Data Centres became necessary.
What is a Green Data Centre?
A green data center is a type of facility, similar to a conventional data center, designed to house a collection of servers. However, what sets it apart is its approach to operation.
A green data centre places a strong emphasis on minimizing its environmental impact and maximizing energy efficiency. These data centres are constructed and operated in accordance with green computing standards, aiming to achieve sustainability and reduce their carbon footprint.
Why it Matters?
- Promotes energy efficiency: Green data centres are designed with the objective of not only conserving energy but also reducing the need for costly infrastructure to manage cooling and power requirements.
- Enhances cost savings: By implementing cutting-edge techniques that consume less power, green data centres contribute to significant reductions in operational and capital expenses for organizations, resulting in cost savings.
- Advances environmental sustainability: Green data centres prioritize minimizing the environmental impact of computing hardware, thereby contributing to the creation of a sustainable ecosystem.
- Enhances reputation and social responsibility: Through compliance with regional regulations and requirements, green data centres help organizations improve their corporate and social standing, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.
- Optimizes resource utilization: Green data centres efficiently utilize various resources such as power, physical space, and heat in an environmentally friendly manner, ensuring optimal utilization and minimizing waste.
